Law enforcement officials in Utah have shared new video footage and photographs of a person of interest wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, urging the public to come forward with any information to aid the ongoing manhunt.
Kirk, the 31-year-old co-founder and CEO of Turning Point USA, was delivering a speech during the kickoff event of his "American Comeback Tour" on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, when a single gunshot struck him around 12:20 p.m. local time. The outdoor gathering at the university's Losee Center in Orem, attended by about 3,000 people, turned chaotic as attendees sought cover and fled the scene. Kirk was rushed to Timpanogos Regional Hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Authorities believe the shot came from a rooftop approximately 125 meters away, fired by a lone gunman dressed in dark clothing.
On Thursday evening, Utah Governor Spencer Cox, alongside Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason and FBI Director Kash Patel, held a press conference to release the materials. The video, captured by campus security cameras, shows the individual descending from the roof of a building near the event site, dropping into a wooded area, and fleeing into a nearby neighborhood. Additional photos depict the person of interest—described as appearing college-aged—wearing a black long-sleeve shirt with an American flag print, dark pants, a hat, sunglasses, Converse-style shoes, and carrying a black backpack—climbing stairs and walking on a residential street before the shooting. TMZ obtained separate security footage geolocated to the area, showing a figure matching this description approaching the campus at 11:49 a.m., noticeably limping or dragging a leg.
The FBI has offered a $100,000 reward for tips leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the suspect, and has received over 7,000 leads since the incident. Investigators have recovered the rifle believed to be the murder weapon but have withheld higher-quality video to avoid compromising the case. Utah officials stated they plan to pursue the death penalty upon apprehension. The university remains closed through the weekend, with enhanced security measures in place.
Earlier, two individuals were briefly detained on campus—one for potential obstruction of justice—but both were released after being cleared of involvement. Initial reports of a suspect in custody proved unfounded, and the investigation, involving federal, state, and local agencies, continues without a named perpetrator or confirmed motive. President Donald Trump, a close ally of Kirk, described the killing as a "political assassination" in a video message, blaming inflammatory rhetoric from the "radical left" and ordering flags at half-staff until September 14. Kirk's organization confirmed his death, noting he left behind a wife and young children, while vigils featuring candles, flowers, and American flags have sprung up near the campus.
The shooting has drawn widespread condemnation across the political spectrum, with figures like Utah Governor Cox calling it a "dark day" for the state and nation, emphasizing that "violence has no place in our public life." Some Republicans have linked it to rising political tensions, while Democrats have highlighted ongoing debates over gun safety.
Kirk's death follows a string of high-profile incidents, including assassination attempts on Trump and other targeted attacks, underscoring concerns about escalating political violence in the U.S. Anyone with information is asked to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit digital media tips online.
